What are the best areas to stay in Gloucester?

The best areas to stay in Gloucester are the city centre, the Docks, Kingsholm and the streets around the hospital. All four are within about 20 minutes’ walk of each other.

City centre and the cathedral

The four Gate Streets meet at the Cross, with the cathedral just to the north-west. Best for a first visit, as most sights, shops and places to eat are on foot.

Gloucester Docks and the Quays

Victorian warehouses around the basins hold flats, bars and the National Waterways Museum, with the Gloucester Quays outlet next door. Busy on summer evenings and during festivals.

Kingsholm

A residential area just north of the centre, around Kingsholm Stadium. Quieter streets, family houses and a short walk into town. Our four-bedroom townhouse and one-bedroom annex are here.

The hospital side of the station

The streets around Great Western Road and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Handy for the station, the hospital and the A38. Three of our apartments are close by.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gloucester city centre safe to stay in?

Gloucester city centre is a normal small-city centre, busy in the day and quieter at night, with more activity around the Docks and Quays at weekends. Take the usual care late at night. If you prefer quieter evenings, stay in Kingsholm or on the hospital side, both within a short walk of the centre.

How many days do you need in Gloucester?

One full day covers the cathedral, the Docks and the Quays. Two or three days lets you add a canal boat trip or a rugby match. You can also take day trips to the Cotswolds, the Forest of Dean or Cheltenham, about 10 minutes away by train.

Is it better to stay in Gloucester or Cheltenham?

Gloucester is usually better value for whole homes and parking, and it sits on the main line with direct trains to Bristol, Birmingham and London. Cheltenham has Regency streets and more upmarket shops but higher prices, especially during race weeks. The two are about 9 miles apart.

Do I need a car when staying in Gloucester?

You do not need a car to visit Gloucester itself, as the centre, the Docks, Kingsholm and the hospital are all walkable. A car helps for the Cotswolds and the Forest of Dean. All our Gloucester homes come with parking, either a space, a drive or an on-street permit.
