The short answer

The best time to visit the Cotswolds is May, June or September, when days are long and the villages are quieter than in August. October is best for autumn colour at Westonbirt, and mid-June to early August for lavender at Snowshill. Winter weekends are the quietest and often the cheapest.

When is lavender season in the Cotswolds?

Lavender season in the Cotswolds runs from mid-June to early August. In 2026, Cotswold Lavender at Snowshill opened from 17 June to 5 August, daily from 10am to 5pm, and it plans to reopen in June 2027.

Snowshill is in the north Cotswolds, about 55 minutes from Cirencester. Go early in the day, as the fields are busiest at weekends. Check dates on the Cotswold Lavender website.

When is the best time for autumn colour in the Cotswolds?

The best time for autumn colour in the Cotswolds is October and early November. Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, near Tetbury, is the place to see it, about 20 to 25 minutes from Cirencester.

Westonbirt’s maples turn red and orange from early October. Weekends in peak weeks are busy and may need pre-booking, so a Friday or Monday visit is easier.

Is the Cotswolds worth visiting in winter?

Yes. The Cotswolds in winter is quieter, often cheaper, and well suited to short walks, pub lunches and evenings in. Cirencester’s shops and the Corinium Museum stay open, with shorter winter hours at the museum.

Footpaths can be muddy from November to March, so stick to estate rides and hilltops, or bring good boots.

When should you avoid visiting the Cotswolds?

Avoid August weekends and bank holidays if you dislike crowds, especially in Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe. If those are your only dates, visit the famous villages before 10am and spend the afternoon on quieter walks.

Booking a base for the whole weekend also helps, as you avoid driving between hotels on busy roads. See our weekend away in the Cotswolds guide for a two-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to visit the Cotswolds?

The cheapest time to visit the Cotswolds is usually January to March, outside school holidays. Accommodation is often priced lower, and the villages are quiet. Weekday stays also tend to cost less than weekends at any time of year. Ask us about longer stays, which usually get a better rate.

Is the Cotswolds busy in summer?

Yes. The best-known villages, such as Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Castle Combe, are very busy on summer weekends and in August. Visit them early or late in the day, and spend the middle of the day on walks or at quieter villages.

Does it snow in the Cotswolds?

Snow falls in the Cotswolds most winters, but rarely for long. Higher ground, such as Cleeve Hill and the hills around Stow-on-the-Wold, gets it more often. Check road conditions before driving on minor lanes, which are not always gritted. Main roads such as the A417 and A429 are usually clear.

When are Cotswolds Christmas markets?

Christmas markets in the Cotswolds usually run from late November into December in market towns across the area. Dates and venues change each year, so check the town council or local events listings before you book a December weekend. Cirencester’s regular charter market still runs every Monday and Friday.
